Feeder Cattle Hedging Window is Open Again

I wanted to reach out following today’s strong move higher in the feeder cattle market. With this recent jump in prices, we’ve once again reached a level that presents a solid opportunity to add to your existing cattle hedges or establish price protection.

For those of you who feel like you may have missed the earlier window, or for anyone wanting to layer in additional coverage, this rally gives us a chance to lock in favorable price floors.

Here’s what we’re currently seeing for protection levels on LRP:

• New Calves and unborn calves : roughly $90/head
• Grass calves (fall end dates): roughly $105–$115/head

The goal here isn’t to pick the top—it’s to take advantage of profitable price levels and protect your margins. Layering in coverage during market strength like this is typically one of the most consistent strategies over time.
